Scope of Work
Etch the background of a 2mtr square Stainless steel containment box and 9mtrs of 300mm diameter vent shaft with indigenous artwork.
Commissioned by Diona for Sydney Water and Liverpool Council, this was a rewarding yet highly challenging project that demanded pinpoint accuracy at every stage. We had the privilege of bringing an Indigenous artist’s work to life on a 9-metre × 300 mm mirror-finish stainless steel ventilation pipe and a 2-metre square OCU motor containment box.
Both structures were fabricated in mirror-finish stainless steel. To achieve the final effect, the background was sandblast-etched away, leaving the artwork in brilliant mirror silver against a frosted backdrop. The result was a striking and elegant contrast that truly showcased the design.
As the pieces were too large for any automated machinery, the entire job was meticulously blasted by hand in a controlled booth. This process ensured the architect’s vision was realised with consistency and care.
Production
Apply precise cut vinyl masking and sandblast etch the entire surface.
One of the key challenges was that the original artwork wasn’t designed as a continuous pattern. To achieve a seamless wrap across all faces of the box and around the shaft, our Graphic Artist, Burc Kantaglu, spent hours carefully adjusting and refining the design. His expertise ensured the pattern flowed perfectly without visible breaks.
Once the extensive vinyl masking was produced and applied, the real test began. Wrapping the curved shaft required patience and experience to align perfectly. Our Master Blaster, Ghiath Khalil, meticulously masked all five sides of the 2-metre square box and fully wrapped the shaft in vinyl before expertly sandblasting the entire surface to achieve the precise finish that brought the artwork to life.
Capability
We specialise in artistic sandblast etching onto any surface, bringing cultural stories, community identity, and architectural visions to life within the urban landscape. Our process combines advanced techniques with skilled craftsmanship to create large-scale etched designs that are both durable and visually striking.
From feature walls and public art installations to functional architectural elements, we deliver seamless etched patterns across panels, curved surfaces, and complex structures. With the ability to work at monumental scales, our team ensures precision alignment, consistent finishes, and enduring quality that withstands the rigours of outdoor environments.
Partnering with architects, designers, builders, and artists, we transform stainless steel into canvases that integrate storytelling and design into the built environment.
