Sustainable Timber Statement

At Premier Awards, we and our suppliers recognise the growing importance of environmental responsibility in everything we do. We are committed to sustainable practices that preserve our forests and natural resources for future generations. We partner only with suppliers who share our commitment to responsible forestry and ethical sourcing.

Statement from Our Australian Timber Supplier – Mathews Timber

Our timber is sourced exclusively from traders who adhere to the highest standards of sustainable resource management. All Australian timber supplied by Mathews Timber is FSC® and PEFC certified, with full Chain of Custody (COC) accreditation.

Chain of Custody

Chain of Custody is the process that tracks certified timber from the forest through every stage of processing, trading, and delivery to the final customer.

At each step in the supply chain, systems are in place to identify certified timber, prevent contamination, and ensure full traceability through third-party auditing.

Every participant in the supply chain must maintain an approved COC system, audited against strict working methods, and hold a current COC certificate.

To maintain certification integrity, customers are encouraged to specify certification requirements at the time of ordering so that invoices and documentation meet all COC compliance standards.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)

Established in 1993, the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) promotes responsible forest management and transparency across the global timber industry through internationally recognised certification.

By 2010, over 129 million hectares of forest in more than 79 countries had been certified under FSC® standards.

FSC®-certified timber is supplied as FSC® 100% (from well-managed forests) or FSC® Mix (from well-managed forests and controlled sources).

Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

Founded in 1999, the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an independent, non-profit, non-government organisation that supports sustainable forest management through third-party certification.

Globally, PEFC represents over 225 million hectares of certified forests.

PEFC certification, including the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS), covers a wide range of Australian timbers such as:

Arakaria, Blackbutt, Blackwood, Myrtle, Georgann, Ironbark, Jarrah, Jelutong, Fijian Mahogany, Meranti, Merbau, Spotted Gum, Sydney Blue Gum, Tasmanian Oak, and Victorian Ash.

Blackbutt Timber and Sustainability

Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) is a durable Australian hardwood valued for its strength, stability, and sustainable sourcing. It is widely harvested from certified native forests and managed plantations under strict environmental controls to ensure long-term forest regeneration.

Available from FSC®- and PEFC-certified suppliers, Blackbutt meets recognised global standards for sustainable forestry. These certifications confirm that harvesting practices maintain biodiversity, protect habitats, and support responsible land management.

With its renewable supply, local availability, and minimal environmental impact, Blackbutt is a responsibly sourced Australian hardwood that aligns with sustainable building and design principles.

Tasmanian Oak and Sustainability

Tasmanian Oak is a premium Australian hardwood sourced from sustainably managed regrowth forests and plantations in Tasmania and Victoria. Harvesting is carefully regulated under Australian forestry standards to ensure environmental protection, regeneration, and long-term resource viability.

Suppliers of Tasmanian Oak commonly hold FSC® and PEFC certification, confirming full Chain of Custody compliance and responsible forest management. These certifications ensure that every stage of production supports biodiversity, ethical practices, and low environmental impact.

Durable, versatile, and responsibly sourced, Tasmanian Oak represents a sustainable choice for quality timber products.

Blue Gum and Sustainability

Blue Gum (Eucalyptus saligna / Eucalyptus globulus) is a strong Australian hardwood sustainably sourced from certified native forests and plantations. Managed under strict environmental guidelines, Blue Gum harvesting ensures forest regeneration, soil health, and biodiversity protection.

Suppliers typically operate under FSC® and PEFC certification, verifying responsible forestry practices and complete Chain of Custody traceability from forest to finished product.

Renowned for its durability, stability, and renewable sourcing, Blue Gum is a sustainable Australian hardwood ideal for environmentally conscious projects.

Rubberwood and Sustainability

Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) is one of the world’s most sustainable timbers. Sourced from retired rubber trees after their latex-producing cycle ends, it’s a renewable by-product of the latex industry rather than timber taken from natural forests.

By repurposing these plantation-grown trees, rubberwood reduces waste and pressure on native forests. Most suppliers are certified under FSC® or PEFC, ensuring responsible management, ethical practices, and full supply chain traceability.

Durable, versatile, and environmentally responsible — rubberwood is a smart choice for sustainable timber products.

Bamboo and Sustainability

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials available — a rapidly renewable natural resource that offers strength, versatility, and environmental benefits comparable to or greater than traditional timber.

Unlike hardwood trees, bamboo is a fast-growing grass that reaches full maturity in just 3 to 5 years. It regenerates naturally from its root system after harvesting, eliminating the need for replanting and preventing soil erosion. This rapid renewability makes bamboo a powerful carbon sink and an excellent alternative to slow-growing forest timbers.

Sustainably managed bamboo plantations are often FSC® certified, ensuring responsible harvesting practices, biodiversity protection, and fair working conditions. With minimal pesticides and fertilisers required, bamboo has a low environmental footprint throughout its growth and production.

Strong, lightweight, and renewable — bamboo represents a modern, eco-friendly choice for sustainable design and manufacturing.
